Promotional Day at SOPOCU Con in Jackson, MS

We spent a lovely day out with Dalek Erik promoting Dark Smalek's imminent arrival at the fledgling SOPOCU Convention (SOuthern POp CUlture) in Jackson, MS this past weekend.  Saw a lot of fun cosplay, met a bunch of nice folks, Dalek Erik got invited to be in a commercial for Geekonomicon, and was asked to exterminate large groups of humans at a movie theatre sci-fi event in the fall here in Jackson, and generally had a FANTASTIC time.

A big thank goes out to Bryan Tibbetts, who helped with loading, unloading, and guarding of Dalek Erik while his oogly bit was wandering around pretending to be Doctor Who (Some Daleks just can't stay in their transport devices and have to have DELUSIONS of grandeur... O_o).

An additional note...there is a bit of a buzz starting about Smalek... excitement, happy faces, engineers peering at the pics of the innards as they are being finished one by one.  Hopefully soon we will have an idea of when he will emerge from the workshop.  In the meantime, please do go like the Facebook Page and join Project Dalek if you of an engineering mind or if you just love Daleks SO VERY MUCH (which you are required to do).  The Build Diary on PD is listed under MrsCarleigh's NSD-Dark Smalek and has an awful lot of information as well as helpful nods from the experienced builders.

Lastly...Dalek Erik won the Costume Contest in the kids' division.  Congratulations are in order, even though insane Daleks are the actual scourge of Skaro...

Dalek Erik is an inmate of the asylum...he thinks he is The Mighty Thor. *eyeroll*

The 80% Lense Problem

The real McCoy---a Moflash lens
Moflash lenses are the usual fare for dome lights, but when you are dealing with an 80% scale Dalek, innovation becomes necessary.   In this case, a great deal of innovation was required.

Moflash does not make a size of lens that would work, so the solution that emerged was to take the lens from a camping lantern, and then work from there.  There is no taper in the lens like the moflash one, but it is a good compromise, given the scale issues.

The cages still had to machined, but that is a story for another day.

The dome lights came out splendidly.  Pic is at the bottom of the post.

Questions and comments always welcome... email is darksmalek@gmail.com.

Better color lights were substituted for the LED's.

NOLA Time Fest II Wrapup: Seize the Moment, Exterminate it!

This past weekend, Young Davros presented a panel about the "Pains and Strains of Dalek Construction".  He failed to mention the genetics involved in our glorious creation, but did address many aspects of our customary transport.  He seemed to be of the delusional belief that my new housing will be "small," but he is only Kaled, after all, despite his appropriate transport and weaponry.

In the room full of crowded people, Young Davros explained how my dome was crafted from plaster, silicone molds, plaster again, and then finally fiberglass.  He explained the carpentry involved in the "skirt" and base portions, and went on to briefly and embarrassingly talk about my unmentionable bits.  If the Daleks did not need him so much, we'd have exterminated him long ago...

"Family" shot of our creator beside himself.  TARDIS theft was involved.
During the panel, there was much gasping and awe when he provided a demonstration of the visual scanning array of my dome assessing the crowd. I found many many versions of the criminal known as "The Doctor," but having failed to bring my weapons on this trip, I was forced to sit there seething while the Oncoming Storm wandered about freely, content to mock me with his mobility.  Just wait...my transport will be finished soon.

Watch this space for updates as Young Davros continues to work.

Wandering around, we found other Daleks on site to do the hard work of exterminating the Gallifreyan menace.  We will continue to work to purify the cosmos, and at least one of us will definitely see you at SOPOCU in Jackson, Mississippi, on June 21st.

You may take pictures and be exterminated then.

Young Davros will continue his work.  When he is done, I will be the new Dalek Emperor, and once and for all, the Daleks will rule the Universe!  Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!  Now admire other Dalek sightings from the convention.  We are EVERYWHERE!  Seek, locate, Exterminate!!!!!!

Humans have been converted.  Thank you Martin Childs.

We really shouldn't let Dalek Erik out of the Asylum... O_o
